We’re also giving an extra $10 to the best tutorial this month, as voted by myself and the mods. This extra $10 used to be awarded to the tutorial with the most votes overall, but we’re trying something different moving forward. All tutos who entered the contest qualify for this additional vote (which is why I’m waiting a bit before sending the prizes to the 3DS/PS4/PS3 winners, as one of them might qualify for an extra $10).

Coldbird’s back – God Eater 2 Localization Team Recruitment

$

0

It seems Coldbird’s finally back with a new project. Coldbird stated that he will be recruiting a new team for translating God Eater 2 on his blog. If you’re a reliable Japanese to English translator please let him know by commenting on his blog post. He has stated that the technical work for dumping / reinserting data has already started, and he’s  got a working dumper.

This is what he wrote:

It’s time for a new project.

No, I’m not abandoning Fragment for this or any of my other currently on-going projects.
But this one just irks me, I loved it when God Eater Burst got a stateside (and later european) release and sucked it up like candy.

Well, this time around we don’t seem to be as lucky with an English localization, so I am officially starting a God Eater 2 translation here.

The technical work for dumping / reinserting data has already started, and a working dumper already exists (took me a few hours to get all the code required for it going).
Like with every other project that involves Japanese to English localization, I am at a loss when it comes to the actual translation, but given the big success of this titles predecessor I’m positive that we will be able to find one or two people willing to provide their help as translators.

If you feel like being part of a project like this, drop a comment with some reference material and your contact information, I will be getting in touch with you.

I will keep you guys posted, as usual.

Greetings, Coldbird

So how many of you here are god eater fans? Knowing that God eater one was a success, I certainly cant wait for this! If you’re a fan of the Monster hunter series for PSP then there’s no doubt that you’d love this game :)

Note from Wololo: For those of you who joined the scene too recently to remember: Coldbird is the hacker/developer who created, among other things, Pro CFW and ARK with fellow dev Virtuous Flame

Developers and users – uOFW needs you!

$

I’m sure some of you still remember uOFW (Unofficial Official Firmware)  – a project that plans to fully reverse engineer the PSP 6.60 OFW Modules. While reverse engineering the whole firmware seems unrealistic, a significant part of the low-level modules is what they’re aiming for. Obviously this is a very long term process so don’t expect this to pop up just yet. Anyways, uOFW needs your support, and if possible they can use some contributors as well. You’ve probably noticed they’ve been pretty quiet for a while on their github, but hopefully some more support here can change this. :) Developers, just so you know, in order to contribute you need to have an advanced knowledge in MIPS ASM and C.

So like what can this do?

The point of this project is simply put as:

  • To understand how the PSP and the PSP firmware works.
  • To enhance our knowledge on the console.
  • To be able to build a ‘complete’ custom firmware. By complete I mean an alternative firmware that can be modified freely.
  • To be able to build other possible low-level hacks. This is still undetermined, but possible.

Reverse of chnnlsv by qwikrazor87 – _kirk7 – Address 0x00001418

So like what’s the difference from a Custom firmware and this ‘alternative firmware’?

Well to answer this, a CFW is a modified official firmware. CFW Developers only understood some parts of the official firmware and replaced them with modified modules, depending on what was required. With uOFW, developers are aiming to fully understand the official firmware. With that said, developers may build firmwares that are free of rights and can open your PSP to more opportunities. This isn’t a part of uOFW’s goal, but something developers can possibly do with uOFW once it’s made more progress.

What are the benefits?

  • Well it’s possible to get a better understanding of how eCFW works for the Vita.
  • It leads to better progress in emulators. For example, the audio.prx module reverse engineering was essential for emulators like PCSP. uOFW has also been used as reference for PPSSPP a couple times. It has also been used as a reference for kernel related projects.
  • More low level development.

There are many possibilities that can be dissected from this project. Many interesting possibilities, such as being able to build a new firmware from scratch or even developing more kernel related projects. While the objective tends to be too high to be realistic, they are still possible but undetermined. This is pretty much ‘the last thing’ left to do on the PSP, and without doubt one of the aspiring projects the PSP scene has ever had. These are the developers so far who have been contributing to this project so far. You should recognize most of these guys, as they’re well known in the PSP/Vita scene.

Woops, I’m a bit late on this one, but here we go: every month we organize a tutorial contest for our 5 favorite devices: the PS Vita, the PS4, the 3DS, the PSP, and the PS3.

Each month, the authors of the best tutorial for each category get a $10 PSN code each, for a total of $50. Additionally, the mods and myself choose our favorite tutorial, and award a bonus $10.

This month we got several entries on the Vita. The PS3 and PS4 contests got no love, while PSP and 3DS got one entry each, automatically winning $10 for their creators. On the Vita, Arikdefrasia’s guide on How to Install Tn-X on the Tekken 2 Exploit got the most votes, while bodega gets the mods’ award this month with his tutorial on extracting __sce_ebootpbp and __sce_menuinfo from a pbp dump

PSP Owners can check Reprep’s extremely useful entry on enabling Analog mode for PS1 games on the PSP, and if you own a 3DS, check out memeoverlord’s How to play GBC roms on 3DS.

tutorial contest

Congratulations to all 4 winners. PSN Codes have been sent and should have reached you by now.

It’s also already time to submit your tutorials for April’s contest! Here again, there’s a total of $60 in PSN codes to win. Your tutorials don’t have to be extremely technical, as long as they are original and directly related to one of the 5 consoles mentioned above. You can see detailed rules and how to participate here: Monthly tutorial contest.

LangSwapper v 1.4 released (PSVita/PSP)

$
0
0

Developer Omega2058 released LangSwapper 1.4 on our forums yesterday.

What is LangSwapper?

LangSwapper is a plugin that lets you play other regions’ games (especially JP imports) without having all your XMB settings suddenly switch to the game’s language. A very good example is, if you’re playing a fan-translated Japanese game (say, for example, Final Fantasy Type 0), your console will still treat it as a Japanese game, and show you Japanese settings/menus when you hit the home button.

This plugin’s concept is simple: it forces the console’s settings to your language of choice, instead of that of the game. And, frankly, this is how the PSP firmware should behave even in Official Firmware. Once again, the scene is here to fix firmware issues 😉

Although the plugin was initially designed for the PSP, it has been reported to work on the PS vita for TN-V users as well.

Omega2058 also released a version of this plugin that in addition to switching languages, can swap O and X buttons within the game (some games especially in JP will override your local preferences for that… heh, now that I think about it, Wagic also always has O as the action button…). Other plugins exist to do that, but it’s nice to have this functionality in one single place.

From Omega2058:

This plugin is aimed towards end users who enjoy playing games from another region (*cough* Japan *cough*) on the PSP. Well, mainly those who wish to keep the in-game HOME menu set to the language specified in the XMB Sytem Settings. Meaning, if you set your language to English, German, French, or anything else while playing a Japanese game (Fan translated or not), the in-game HOME menu will always be set to use that language.

This also patches the Savedata Utility to use the language selected in the XMB as well.

The binary and source code (Comments included) is located below along with a link to the repository. If you don’t see your CFW on the compatibility list below, please test it and post results so it can be improved. Also report any bugs, odd behavior or questions if you have any. Cheers. :)

By request, a version which also swaps X to Enter and O to Back will be attached below and this will be in effect for any revision released in the future (I’ll set up the repo for the button patching another time). There are two versions. The first is the original which patches the language. The second patches the language AND the button input.

Version 1.4 fixes a few bugs and improves compatibility with some CFW versions. Again, this has been reported to be compatible with TN-V

Every month we organize a tutorial contest for our 5 favorite devices: the PS Vita, the PS4, the 3DS, the PSP, and the PS3.

Each month, the authors of the best tutorial for each category get a $10 PSN code each, for a total of $50.

We only got 3 entries this month: 2 for the Vita, and one for the PS3. I’ve decided to be lazy this month and award $10 to each single entry. Yay, everybody wins, it’s like a Disney movie!

Nevertheless, the entries this month are pretty solid and all deserved some recognition: On the PS vita, DPyro improved on Abdulec’s winning entry from last month, and provides us an improved guide explaining how to connect your Lower firmware vita on a PC with Wifi. Hanzyusuf has a straightforward tutorial to use two PS Vita accounts on one memory card.

On the PS3, link2sai explains how to retrieve your own PS3 IDPS, to use on pexploit. Useful if idpstealer doesn’t work for you.

Congratulations to all 3 winners. PSN Codes have been sent and should reach you very soon, check your emails.

In addition, it might be inconvenient for you to be constantly connected when you want to copy your files from and to the Vita. This patch is here to help you with this situation

Wireless PSP Custom Firmware installation is now possible!

$
0
0

If you want to flash your PSP, you usually had to use a USB connection or a card reader to put the Custom Firmware files onto your memory stick, since the PSP is usually unable to properly download them itself.

This has changed now. It is now possible to download & install a PSP Custom Firmware directly onto your PSP.

PSP

If you happen to not own an USB cable for your PSP, but also not a card reader for your PSPs memory stick, then this solution will be something for you:

You only need a working Wifi connection, your PSP itself and around 2-12 Megabytes of free space on your memory stick (or internal storage).

PSP-E1000-Black

Visit the following website, and then select your current installed PSP firmware.

After selecting your PSPs firmware, you have to select which PSP exactly you are using (1000, 2000, 2000v3, 3000, E1000 or PSPgo) and then you will be redirected to a download page for an eligible Custom Firmware for your Playstation Portable.

The site you are getting redirected to is prepared to enable your PSP to directly download the custom firmware files onto your memory stick (or internal storage), which will also be placed in the correct directory (ms0:/PSP/GAME/).

The only requirement is that your PSP has to run a supported firmware (6.20, 6.39, 6.60 or 6.61), but that can be done by the build-in wireless system update feature, which will let you install the official system software 6.61.

It might be a bit late, but offering an on-PSP solution for installing a custom firmware with nothing else than the PSP itself has always been something I wanted to offer.

Feel free to contact me, if you happen to find some bugs. Depending on your Wifi connection, it might take a while to successfully download some of the offered files.

RetroArch 1.2 PSP/3DS

$
0
0

The last time we spoke of RetroArch was quite a while ago, where it was confirmed working on the PS-Vita’s TN-V around last year December. Libretro’s now getting back to releasing yet another great update from the multi-system emulator, RetroArch 1.2. Although the 3DS version is still under development, we can expect this update for the PSP in the coming weeks. This new update brings a lot of new goodies such as:

– Brand new ‘eye candy’ menus

RetroArch now lets you select between three menu display modes:

* RGUI – a very classic, low-resolution menu

* GLUI – a more advanced GL-based menu that lends itself well to touch-based devices

* XMB (a horizontal crossbar menu that is the most eyecandy-rich of all three right now. Similar to the PS3’s and PSP’s menu.

– Scanning files/directories and adding them to the system collections

With this you no longer have to browse your file system all the time looking for a ROM to play. If RetroArch finds a match with a known game on a given system/emulator, it will then add this game to a collection based on the system/emulator of that game.

– Downloading cores online

You can now download cores from RetroArch’s buildbot within the program. Go to Online Updater -> Core Updater and select any of the cores you’d like to have updated/installed.

Built-in input mapping

To access this option Go to Settings -> Input Settings and select ‘Bind All’ to bind each and every button one at a time, or bind the actions individual.

– Ability to remap controls

Similar to what we saw on a recent PS4 update.  To access this option, go to the ‘Quick Menu’ and select ‘Core Input Remapping Options’. From there you can change the controls for each core, which are then saved into a config file.

– Multi-language support

This is self explanatory.

Box Arts!

And a bunch of other cool stuff with more details. You can check them all out here!

I’ll conclude by quoting what Libretro had to say about their PSP/3DS updates:

Some other notes (3DS / PSP version)

We could maybe push out a PSP version of RetroArch 1.2 in the upcoming weeks. I’m hoping to get back with the main contributor (aliaspider) who worked on these ports so that we can be assured that we can at least push out the PSP version in a more or less stable and decent state.

Regarding RetroArch 3DS: it’s still very much a work-in-progress and I don’t think either me or aliaspider would feel comfortable to ship anything right now in terms of official release at this stage, and we need a lot of work done on the cores before we can render some of them playable on the slow 3DS (it’s even slower than the PSP it seems).

If all goes well, maybe we can expect a Vita port sometime? 😉

God Eater 2 PSP Translation goes public – We need your help!

$

0

Developers Coldbird and noname120 have decided to open the God Eater 2 translation to the public. This means anyone can now contribute without their approval. You do not have to be part of the ‘team’, you can simply translate by just connecting to their transifex project here.

God Eater 2 is an RPG game that was released in 2013 in Japan. It is a sequel to God Eater Burst for PSP. It was then later released for the Playstation Vita and PS4 as God Eater 2 Rage Burst. There are new features and additions such as the three new weapons, the Boost Hammer, Charge Spear, and the Shotgun, each with its own function and abilities for the player to use. If you’ve played and liked the first one, then surely you’d love the second.

I want to emphasize, if anyone’s willing to translate while relying on google translate or any other automated translator, please do NOT do so. These translators are known to produce horrible translations, since they usually just translate everything word for word, and when written in English it is usually not put very well.

Contact them here – Source and more information!

PSP’s IDPS can be used to unban your PS3, some strangers might be using your PSP’s identity right now to unban their own PS3

Yesterday, the all known Hacker Mr.Gas shared here on /Talk where the IDPS from the PSP could be found. Developers asked a few Years ago about ID Storage Dumps to create a Tool which should fix the ID Storage if it was corrupted, but Mr.Gas researched these Dumps and found out that the IDPS was stored in the 121 ID Storage Key (0x0121.bin). I could promptly confirm then at Offset 0x60 was a 16 Byte Value which looks very suspiciously to the IDPS from a PS3.

I made also a Video today how it was possible to dump the PSP IDPS

But what is the IDPS ?

The IDPS is a 16 byte value that contains console specific information like the Target ID and Model Type of the Device, now you could say “Yeah what’s so special about this?”.

Well the IDPS was involved in some tasks like the Activation of Content and the PlayStation Network. It’s also a unique identifier of your console! If you ever uploaded your “ID Storage Dump” from your PSP, Unfortunately Bad Guys with a banned CFW PS3 could grab these IDPS’s now and could spoof your Console to get unbanned and go Online. Sony seems only to check if the IDPS was Valid and not which Device was beyond of this IDPS. In other words, a guy with a banned PS3 could take a PSP IDPS and use it to get “unbanned”. If they happen to do something wrong again, both their PS3 and your PSP will get banned. The key point of this is, when someone steal one if these IDPS and gets banned the PSP was too banned and a innocent user will be hurt hurt for it.
Here is proof from me that it really works

Note from Wololo: The “bright” side of this is that if you own a PSP, and a banned PS3, you can unban your PS3 by reusing your PSP’s IDPS. Since the PSN is pretty much useless today for PSPs, you’re not risking much by “recycling” its IDPS for a device that needs it more, namely your PS3.

How to unban your PS3 from the PSN by recycling your PSP’s IDPS

If you own a PSP, and a PS3 that’s been banned from the PSN, you can unban your PS3 by spoofing its IDPS with your PSP’s IDPS. To do so, you’ll need:

  1. Install IDStorage Manager in the PSP/GAME folder of your PSP (note: depending on the version you get, you will need to create a folder “IDStorage” in PSP/GAMES, and put the EBOOT.PBP file in it. also make sure the file is named EBOOT.PBP, and not FBOOT.PBP, rename it if needed)
  2. Run IDStorage Manager from your PSP
  3. Run the dump
  4. Exit the app, and connect your PSP to your computer again, there will be a folder named “keys”, the file you want to open is named 0x0121.bin
  5. Open 0x0121.bin with an Hex editor, and grab the 16 bytes starting at address 0x60. Those 16 bytes are your PSP’s IDPS
  6. You can then use this value as the “spoof IDPS” entry on your PS3’s CFW (if it supports it) or any other Spoofer you typically use.
