A trip down homebrew lane: DaedalusX64 (PSP)

This is probably one of the most… peculiar homebrew for our PSPs. The PSP isn’t a slow poke but an N64 on that device? Not even an Apple A5 device can run it let alone a device that was released back in 2004! DaedalusX64 is truly an engineering feat that is a tad more than a PoC.

What’s DaedalusX64 and why is it remarkable?

Emulating the Nintendo 64 on such an old device is no easy feat but it was done, sort of. This homebrew was a continuation of the original Daedalus emulator by  developer ‘StrmnNrmn’ a few years back. Daedalus has various great features such as a nice UI, audio support, 16:9/4:3 video mode switching and various speedhacks (enabled at your own discretion).

Various games had issues but on a PSP Slim (extra RAM), you could play Super Mario 64, Super Smash Bros and Super Mario Kart 64 (and probably a few others games) at a playable framerate. After that, it was noted that the PSVita via VHBL (or any PSP exploit) ran the emulator better than the system it was designed from! The latest version was released back in June 2014 and its version number is R1909.

Conclusion:

DaedalusX64 is an interesting PoC that evolved into a bit more than just a PoC. With some playable games, it’s the closest you can get to an N64 emulator on a non-Android portable console. We can now look forward to N64 emulation on the PSVita as it’s being developed over at libretro. We can’t forget that developer ‘xerpi’ is playing around with libGXM (the Vita’s graphic library) so that he can help pit with the N64 emulator!
