A trip down homebrew lane: SuperTux for PSP

The Christmas season is with us so it’s the perfect time to mention a snow-filled game called SuperTux. SuperTux is probably one of the few homebrew that is close to being Christmas themed so it’s a great thing to look back to if you’re into older homebrew!

What’s SuperTux

SuperTux, like Super Mario Brothers, is a 2D platforming game in which you need to progress through levels to get to finish the game. You also have to kill numerous enemies by jumping on them or by throwing pallets at them if your character is at a level high enough. Various enemies exist and some are pretty annoying to kill. SuperTux is an open-source game that was originally released in 2003 which was initially released for computers. Later on, it ended up getting ported to a variety of systems such as the Wii, GP2X, Android devices and the PSP. SuperTux is a completely free piece of software that’s licensed under the GNU GPL license so one can port it to any system they wish as it’s fully open source.

The PSP version

The PSP port was created back in 2006 by developer “Jomar”. It’s a port of version 0.1.3 which while isn’t the latest version, latest version is 0.5.1, it is enjoyable nonetheless. It has the core gameplay in there and it also looks pretty nice on the PSP’s screen, it also has an FPS counter which rarely falls below 30. Button controls are pretty simple as there’s one button to jump and another to shoot the palette at the enemies. The PSP version also allows the player to save the game. This piece of homebrew for the PSP is compatible with the PSVita, both in VHBL and Adrenaline, and should work on all PSP consoles that allow homebrew to run (it even works on 6.61).

Maybe one day, we’ll also get a fully fledged PSVita version that’s a port of the latest version since there’s an SDL port of the game.
